About Me

Dr. Aby P. Joy is a senior journalist, researcher and author based in Kozhikode, Kerala, with more than three decades of professional experience in journalism. Since beginning his career with Mathrubhumi in 1995, he has worked across several major centres in Kerala, gaining extensive experience in reporting, news desks, NRI/NRE journalism and news bureau operations.

He holds a PhD in Journalism from Mahatma Gandhi University, with his doctoral research focusing on “Contemporary Journalistic Trends – A Gandhian Critique.” His academic background also includes an MA in Gandhian Studies & Peace Science, which he completed with First Rank, and a PG Diploma in Journalism & Communication from the Kerala Press Academy, where he also secured a rank.

Professional Journey

Dr. Aby P. Joy began his journalism career on 20 March 1995 as a liner with Mathrubhumi at its Kottayam unit. He joined the organisation's permanent service in 2005 and subsequently worked at several important centres, including Kottayam, Kochi, Thrissur, Kannur, Idukki and Kozhikode.

Over his long association with Mathrubhumi, he has worked in areas including the Central Desk, NRI/NRE and News Bureau, developing experience across both field journalism and newsroom operations. His Mathrubhumi career spans 31 years.

Earlier, while pursuing his MA, he also worked as a freelance journalist with Deepika in Kottayam for about a year.

Academic & Research Contributions

His academic interests centre on journalism, Gandhian thought, media transformation and language.

His doctoral research, “Contemporary Journalistic Trends – A Gandhian Critique,” examines contemporary journalism through the principles and perspectives of Mahatma Gandhi.

He was also awarded a post-doctoral fellowship by the Kerala Council for Historical Research for the study “Transition of Media in Kerala – A Historical Study of the Last Two Decades of Globalisation,” examining the transformation of Kerala's media landscape during the era of globalisation.

A further post-doctoral fellowship from UC College, Aluva, supported his linguistic research titled “പത്രങ്ങൾ വരുത്തുന്ന ഭാഷാ വ്യതിയാനങ്ങൾ” (Changes in Language Brought About by Newspapers), focusing on the influence of newspapers on Malayalam language and journalistic usage.

Dr. Aby P. Joy is the author of “Pathrapravarthakanaya Gandhiji” (പത്രപ്രവർത്തകനായ ഗാന്ധിജി), published by Mathrubhumi Books. The book explores Mahatma Gandhi's career as a journalist and his ideas and approach to journalism.

Throughout his career, he has contributed numerous news reports, articles, features and analytical pieces to Mathrubhumi and its periodical publications. He has also received the Mathrubhumi “Break of the Week” recognition twice for notable news reports.
