Chevalier C. E. Chackunny is a prominent entrepreneur, social activist and development advocate associated with the social, economic and commercial advancement of Malabar, particularly Kozhikode.
Born in Chalissery, Palakkad, he moved to Kozhikode at the age of 16 with just five rupees and two pairs of clothes. Beginning his career as a trainee at Vijaya Traders on a monthly salary of ₹15, he went on to establish his own business and build a successful distribution and business network. His association with brands including Chandrika, Ujala, Medimix, Terlin and Hawai played an important role in his entrepreneurial journey.
Beyond business, Chackunny has dedicated significant time and resources to Malabar's infrastructure and public development, particularly railway connectivity, road development, Calicut International Airport (Karipur) and coastal transportation. Through the Malabar Development Council (MDC) and other public initiatives, he has consistently advocated for the interests of travellers, expatriates, traders and the wider community.
His public-service activities also include charitable support for underprivileged patients, educational assistance for children and support for families facing housing and financial difficulties. During the COVID period, he also waived building rents to support workers.
His journey from a young migrant worker to a successful entrepreneur and influential development advocate has made “Ujala Chackunny” a recognised name in Kozhikode's business and public life. He has also received several honours, including the Chevalier distinction.
